Nero, adopted by Claudius in AD 50. His mother Agrippina was behind Nero first being raised to the rank of Princeps Juventutis (Leader of Youth) in 51 AD. Nero now appears on the coinage, as the official heir and not Britannicus, the son of Claudius.
It was customary for the Order of Roman Knights to give the Princes of the Youth a silver spear and shield. This coin type was struck on the occasion of Neros appointment as consul designatus on 4 March 51 and the acquisition of the title Princeps Iuventutis (first of the young). He thus became one of the legal successors of Emperor Claudius. Caius and Lucius, sons of Agrippa, received a similar present, being Principes Juventutis. It is also, in this quality, that Nero is here recorded to have been complimented with a spear shield by the Equastrian Order.
